WHO WERE BORN IN THE .... 1930's 1940's, 50's, 60's and early 70's ! First, we survived being born to mothers who drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos. They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.. Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and...
My Mum got some photos lately from an American cousin. They were taken in 1948 but the locations of some of them are unknown to us, and has caused some debate!! There may be somebody out there that...
Having watched the unfolding drama of this years Six Nations Rugby Tournament, and listened to many commentators in the weeks that followed about how great this current team is, my mind wandered back a number of years to the great Jack Charlton era in Irish soccer and of the wonderful songs that were written e.g. “Give it a Lash, Jack”, although these great team never won anything they were immortalised in many different songs. Now this rugby team have won the equivalent to the European Championships and I...
In days gone by, (I’m only talking about 30 years ago) there seems to a lot more snow going when it snowed. Nothing seems to move if it snowed at all, well only the sleighers! At the first sight of snow, I’d have to get all the gear on (that was,2 pairs socks, vest, t-shirt, jumper, warm coat, wellies, hat and the mittens that were connected together with wool or string that went through the arms of the coat), and head outside to build a snowman. Half an hour later, I’d be back in at the range trying to “Thaw” out...
Anybody that knows me will know that I am a huge fan of the one and only singer and song writer Christy Moore. Having seen him in concert quite a few times, from The Abbey in Donegal Town (with Moving Hearts) to The Hawks Theatre, Crawley, West Sussex. At good concerts, The Highlands Hotel in Glenties which was brilliant, and bad ones, The Travelers Friend, Castlebar, which was brutal. He has such a way of putting so much heart and soul into each song that he sings wheather it be “The Lakes of Poncatrain” or Lisdoonvarna...
Spelling was never a strong point of mine and especially written English was always a problem, using the correct spelling for the correct word still does my head in. Examples of some of these are there/their, write/ right, by/bye/buy, hear/here, hymn/ him, being some of them. The one that I’m going to talk about is to /two /too. The following puzzle was put to me lately, to make a sentence, again which makes sense, using 6 to/two/too in a row and also to write it down using the correct spelling. I am going to attempt...
I have, what you could call, “A Terrible Sweet Tooth”, so much so that I’m lucky that I have any left at all!!!!!!! I was asked lately about my favorite dessert, to which I had to answer “Banoffee Pie”. Now this dessert should carry a health warning! As it is very high in cholesterol, low in saturates and did I mention High in cholesterol!! Here follows is a recipe for same! Different books and chefs will tell you different ways of making it, but I have found this one to be the best! And I have tried quite a few...
Having watched the Under 13 Divisional Final in Fintra last week, between Kilcar and Killybegs, I was compelled to write a wee note about it. The Democrat described it as “A classic encounter” and “One of the best games ever in Fintra”, and I must agree fully. I met a Kilcar man after the match and he reckoned that “Boys became Men today out there! Isn’t it great”? It reminded of the great matches between Kilcar, Glen, Ardara and Killybegs in the 70’s, 80’s & 90’s. Although the game ended...
I’m going to start you off with a wee riddle, answer at the end! Make a sentence, which makes sense,(which is more than this article will make!!) that includes the word “AND” 5 times in a row!! I must say that my days at school were probably the best days of my life. Although I was not the brightest (maybe it was laziness) , I did try my best. Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!! Looking back, I have to feel sorry for all the teachers that came across me and my devilment! I’m going to pick one...
