McNulty and Curran chase U-21 position
Kilcar clubman John McNulty wants a crack at managing the county U-21 football team but could face competition from Maxi Curran.
McNulty, who has an impressive track record of managing at club level, threw his hat into the ring after attending Monday night’s county committee meeting and hearing that the position was still vacant.
“Managing at county level is something I have often thought about and has been at the back of my head for some time. But any time a vacancy came up I always seemed to be tied up with club commitments. Even this time when the position was first advertised back in November, I was involved with Kilcar in the U-21 championship and did not go for it,” McNulty told the Democrat.
“But I’m free now and in a position to give it a try and when I heard on Monday night that the position was still vacant and they were having difficulty filling it I made my mind up I would give it a go. There are a lot of good young footballers out there and having managed Kilcar at minor and U-21 level in recent years I know most of them and I would like to get the opportunity to work with them.
“I have spoken to the county chairman P.J. McGowan and my application is with the county board.”
John McNulty has enjoyed a very successful career with Kilcar and only before Christmas he guided the club to a U-21A championship success, the club’s first since 1974.
The year before he managed the club to minor championship in 2010 and the Kilcar seniors to an All-Ireland Gaeltacht championship in 2008, while he has also led the senior reserve team to Division One and Two league titles.
Meanwhile, senior team mentor Maxi Curran has also confirmed that he is considering his options and is thinking of going for the job too.
When contacted last night by the Democrat, Curran said that he was ‘contemplating’ going for the position but would not be drawn any further on the topic.
It is understood that Curran was approached about the position over the weekend by county officials and indeed there was speculation ahead of last Monday night’s county committee meeting that his name was going to go before county committee for approval.
The position was re-advertised last week after Joe McBrearty and one other (believed to be Eamon O’Boyle), who had been originally nominated for the position, withdrew from the race.
