My ggg-grandfather Robert McConnell, born c1795 and his wife Catherine (Unknown), born c1800, along with two young sons John (my gg-grandfather) b.1823 and William b.1824, left Donegal, took ship in Londonderry and landed in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1830. I know the story of the family after they arrived in Canada (I was born on the farm of the original land grant), but am stymied in finding anything about them in Ireland. The family was Protestant, and kept a picture of William Prince of Orange hanging in the parlour. Since I do not know the townland or parish from which they came and since ship lists of the 1830 era are almost non-existent, and since (I think) the Tithe Applotment does not apply to Donegal, I do not know how to filter through these very common McConnell first names to narrow a search in such a wide field. I have pondered Griffiths Valuation, thinking that almost certainly some of the family remained in Donegal. The names John, William and Robert are repeated through generations of our family. But that line of thought can get one cornered. Over the years they developed a large farm in Canada and were quite hunters. Thank you. Eva Haddix
